Our music video was aimed at all the female teenagers
ranging from 13 to 17 years old. We also showed our music video to an older age
group and even though they weren’t our target audience they enjoyed watching
the music video. This is a positive thing as it means we can appeal to a mass
audience if we want too. We found the range we aimed at was a ‘pop princess’ audience
and they also enjoyed listening and being a fan of similar artists. Below is a
presentation showing examples of our primary and secondary audience:
First Draft
We made the first draft of our music video and presented it to our fellow class mates and other students on the media course at the end of November to the start of December. This allowed us to gain valuable feedback. We got our notes on feedback through asking them to fill out a series of questions about the framing, editing and camera work of our music video.
From the feedback, it showed that people liked how the image behind the artist matched the song which is upbeat and could clearly see the image we are trying to portray of a fun, innocent seventeen-year-old girl which is good as that is what we wanted. Another positive thing which the audience picked out was that it fitted the genre of pop, this was a very important factor as it meant we were well on our way to creating a successful music video that is under the genre of music which we are aiming to create. They also said there a clear evidence of synergy throughout the video, website and digi-pak.
However, people said that the different shots were too long forcing them too become uninterested so needed to be cut shorter. They also said that the outside scenes colours were too dark and this contrasted too highly with the man made lighting which was indoors. They also disliked the baking scene as it had bad lip syncing because it was out of time. We took this feedback into account when we started to refilm and edit our final music video and we made the following changes to the music video: we changed the speed of the shots to make the footage faster and we changed the contrast and brightness of the clips to make the colours stand out more rather than be faded.
Feedback
after final music video
Audience Research feedback
By looking at this feedback I was able to understand the
general views and ideas about our music video. Most people who we asked agreed
that Ava had been shown as an up and coming artist, and they felt as though the
way we had portrayed her, through our music video and other products. We had
mixed opinions on what the favourite part of the music video was, and people
were quick to come up with other ideas. Thought that it could be improved by
having less people in a shot at once in some of the areas. Lollie said we could
have played around with the contrast, because there is extreme in the jumps
from the brightness in some of the shots. They thought we had a good connection
between the colour, especially with the good use of yellow through the video.
It is also good that Ben noticed the use off cross media synergy. All of the
people who did the feedback said they thought the video was pop, which was
correct, and was good to hear. They also said that the gene does match the
products, because of the colours, coming together and becoming a whole project.
I think the feedback which we received was really helpful and interesting to
hear. They really liked the website and thought that it was easy to get around,
as well as liking how it looked.
From this
feedback we learnt that we had clearly shown a unique style which was
eye-catching enough and suitable for an upcoming artist. Another factor what
was pointed out to us was that they all had different favourite parts which
showed how the whole video was up to a certain standard and not just pin-pointed
scenes. We also learnt from the headshot interview that we needed to spend more
time on the editing side to ensure the contrast in brightness is not too
extreme while contrasting and noticeable. Another thing which could have been improved
if we redid our music video was to have less people in the music to ensure our
upcoming artist stands out.
I made sure that we got the target audience to look at our video. So we used Mollys sister and her friends to give their opinion about the video. They seemed to really enjoy our music video and like the other things which I created such as the website and digipak. They said that they thought it suited the audience and they would definitely watch it again. They also said they could tell that the genre was pop. I a really glad that I asked this age (13) to watch this video because it allowed me to see that the correct Audience liked it. From this feedback we learnt that from an untrained media eye they thought the music was upbeat and fitted the genre, which was good to hear. From their feedback we learnt that if we redid our music video to use less people as there was too many different people in it which confused them.
This our focus group, this was a really good thing for us to do because it allowed us to talk face to face with an audience about what they liked about our music video and what they didn't like so much. The feedback which I received was really good and I was really impressed with what everyone thought. They said that our music video was much better than what they had seen from the previous drafts, and they were really impressed by the cross media synergy which we managed to create in our music video, from the yellow colours. They said to improve that we could add some more brightness into some of the darker areas to fit with the rest of the video. They also said that we also could have had a continuity of the same friends rather than changing. We learnt from the focus group that everyone could see a clear representation of synergy of yellow and fun. We learnt on how to improve our music video by spending more time on editing and to ensure the same faces of friends throughout.
Above is the response to the question which we looked at which was: In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
In today's lesson we were introduced to our groups, in my
group is Molly Robinson and myself Ella Fleming. We both found and researched 3
songs of our choice to present to each other and we explained for each music
video for the songs. The two songs that as a group we decided were our favorite
were ‘Need somebody to love’ by Ady Suleiman and 'seventeen’ by Alessia Cara.
We decided that our vision for the music video for Need somebody to love would
be a male singer and a narrative of a little boy walking through the forest.
The idea we had for the 'Seventeen' music video was for an equal narrative and
showing of the artist. The narrative is all about a female character doing the
stereotypical things a seventeen year old would do from being with her friends and
young love. We also had another song idea called 'We still run’ by Gonzalla but
we decided against this song wasn't unique or original enough so we decided to
go with the other two song ideas instead.
Day 2 - 21st September
Then once we had decided on these two songs we started to
make a presentation that we could show to the class and receive feedback of
what song and video idea they prefer.
In today's lesson we decided to complete the lip sync task.
So myself and molly lip synced the our chosen
song ‘seventeen’ This task was to help see who was the most confident
and best performer, also who fits the part and image of the artist the best. In
the lesson we then edited the lip sync task together and posted it on YouTube
and on my blog so that people can view the lip sync task and help us decide who
is best suited for the songs and which song will get us the best result from a
music video. This lesson was used for us all individually to get on with the
tasks that we have be assigned, so that we can keep on top of the work and stay
on schedule ready for filming in a couple of weeks’ time.
Day 5 - 26th September
In today's lesson we sat as a group and decided to have a
massive brainstorm about the locations, shot ideas, costume ideas etc. for our
music video. This is to help us to complete the tasks assigned for planning
more easily. We came up with many different locations for our music videos and
the theme we are trying to portray throughout. I also started the storyboards
and Lyric analysis while Molly started to create the mood boards. On my lyric
analysis, I annotated the lyrics and how they are going to be illustrated in
certain parts of the lyrics through the background and actions we do in the
scenes, whilst the other one which molly did displayed all of our ideas
(setting ideas, singers name ideas, etc.)
Day 6- 28th September
Today Molly and I came up with the artist name AVA In
today’s lesson, we had thoughts on what our singers name would be, this is an
important part of the process and took quite some time. We couldn’t decide
fully on what the name would be but we had some idea's such as "Lola"
and "Molly May." but we didn't decide in the lesson. In this lesson Molly
continued with the website research whilst I started on the digipak research.
Day 7- Thursday 1st October
In today’s lesson we did our first photo-shoot. Molly
changed into different outfits to give our artist a range of images to use
across our website, social media and digipak which suited the image we are
going for. We decided to position molly on a background but then we quickly
realised the lighting wasn’t great and made her look pasty which we wouldn’t be
able to fix on editing software so then we went to an area with a white
background by a lot of natural light with it as the background was next to
windows, so the images would turn out bright instead of dark and gloomy which
gave us better quality images. We used a
camera on a tripod and just filmed Molly and then we took screenshots after for
the photos, in our next photoshoot we hope to use a better quality camera that
is meant for filming as filming didn’t always give us clear photos. We managed
to get some clear photos despite it being a poor quality camera and have
uploaded them to our blog.
Day 8- Tuesday 4th
October
In today's lesson, we emailed Mrs Moon, the head of the
drama department to ask to use the drama studio for part of our filming. I
added to the production diary whilst Molly continued with the storyboard. We
also discussed the times we will be filming by comparing our school timetables
to see when we were all free. We are hoping to film some performance shots
within the next week in the drama studio during school time which we can
hopefully use in our media lesson of after school. I created a Twitter,
Instagram and snapchat account/ pages for our singer and Molly created a page
for Facebook, we all have access to these accounts so can make them look really
professional and can take turns to keep them up to date.
Day 9 – Wednesday 5th October
Today we did a
practice take for our opening sequence. Molly ran through the lyric, I did the
camera angles and movement and also we both did the editing process. By doing
this practice we assessed the technicalities of the sequence of shots. For
example, the opening mid shot of the zoom might be avoided as it looked to
unstable and we thought cutaways might look more professional.
Day 10 – Thursday 6th October
Today was our first day of filming. We went into the drama
studio as there was a black brick wall and filmed our first lip syncing shots.
We had the first scene planned out in our heads. We gathered all the equipment
needed and went to the drama studio to film. Luckily a friend of ours Rory knew
exactly how all the lighting worked in the drama studio therefore we adjusted
the lights to make the background have a bright for when Molly filmed. Again we
used a tripod to film and we took 2 cameras to get different angles.
Day 11- Friday 7th October
In today's lesson we did a second photo-shoot, we took more
time on this as we used our free period first as well this meant we had the
time to carefully decide on photos, lighting, costumes and makeup and had
enough time to take many photos which looked a lot better as we had better and
clearer idea of what image we wanted our artist molly to portray. We didn't use
any props apart from a chair and we wanted the photos to be grungy-pop like so Molly
wore dark colours and had less 'girly poses' compared to the first. Molly and I
have all presented these photos on our own blogs to show which ones we all
liked and thought were best for the social media sites. As we have created all
our social media accounts we have been making regular updates and new photos we
take to inform the people who are interested in our artist
As well as this, Molly worked on the steal-o-matic for the
blog, I added to the production diary and we both added to her blog. We all had
a look through the photos we took in the photo-shoot and discussed which ones
were good and which ones were best in terms of the theme which we are
constantly changing.
Day 12 – Monday 10th October
In today’s lesson Molly finished the
steal-o-matic whilst I did research on similar Artist photo shoots and carried
on with the blog tasks. As well as this, I added to the production diary.
Day 13- Tuesday 11th October
Today we made a decision about changing our music video. We
sat down as a group and said that we need to adjust something in our plan
because we were a bit confused to where our video was going. We decided that we
needed to know exactly what our group was and who was in it because we were on
different pages to where things were going, while trying to take in consideration
what our teachers were suggesting. I wanted the narrative to be more urban with
showing the contrasting side to be seventeen, where Molly did agree to an
element but wanted to keep put in some other elements in the narrative like
drinking and smoking. Although our teacher did like this, she was keen to keep
some of the first footage which we had filmed of the main character of our
narrative messing around at the park.
Finally, we came to the decision that the artist and
narrative was going to be changed to just more urban older darker teen, this
means we will have to change certain things in the video such as none of the
footage of me at home doing homework. Although this will cause problems like
changes in photos and albums etc. but this will be good for us as we are able
to become more creative with our ideas, which will lead to original material
instead of conforming to the stereotypical girly girl.
After making this decision, I added a post to the blog about
these changes and added to the production diary whilst Molly changed the storyboard
because we now need to change certain shots in the video where it was going to
be the myself in the narrative and Molly lip syncing being girly which is the
opposite to our image now.
Day 13- Wednesday 12th October
In lesson today we discussed what shots we need to get next
time filming which was going to be after school today. This footage will be of
just Molly with the brick wall background in the drama studio. After this we
decided to go and film out myself in our local town because it was a bright and
dry day therefore we could make the most of good natural lighting. We went to
the train station. I preformed using the setting of where all the all the
commuters keep their bikes as they go to London as it looked cool for the image
we want to set whilst Molly filmed using one of the tripod and camera.
After Filming, we both went back to school which had
finished by the time we got back and stayed for a couple of hours both in the
media classroom. We used the time in the classroom to upload the footage and to
filter through which we wanted to keep and put into our edit.
Day 14 – Friday 14th October
Today we ordered some glitter for molly lip sync out of our
media budget. We ordered colours which match our colour theme Grey, blue and
purple. Our idea is to have Molly lip-syncing while with the help from our
friends to have them pour glitter over her without their hands getting in the
shots. I am go on to edit this footage and put it into stop motion while
reversing and cloning.
Day 15- Monday 17
October
As Molly and I have completely changed our image I rewrote a
shot lit of everywhere we wanted/need to film to portray our image we want for
when we next film to ensure we are including everything we need. We then made
sure we have uploaded all our footage to premiere on our editing computer and
put together our best shots so far and edited them. We also downloaded the song
‘Seventeen’ to the computer and put it onto the software as well.
Day 16- Wednesday 19th October
In this lesson we used it to plan what I will get on for the
next lesson while Molly is absent. We discussed everything that needs doing in
order to be ready to film for when Molly comes back. We realised we ned to ask
some of friends to be in our music video so we made to some phone to ask if
they can give up the time and be in our video. I would also spend time catching
up with blog posts such as the production diary ensuring I added images and to
be up to date on what we have been working on. I also ensured the digi-pak was
up to a high quality standard and started planning the footage we wanted to
film for our next filming lesson. While Molly was absent she did some work
outside of school on the website to ensure she was keeping up with deadlines.
Day 17- Friday 21st October
Today is the final day before we have half term which a week
long. As we had emailed the head of the drama department again to request to
use the drama studio for filming, she informed us that it was free today after
school today, so we saw the opportunity to film the glitter footage/scene. We
knew the glitter would be messy so we took plastic sheets to the area we were
doing it and laid them on the floor so it would catch the glitter and we could
simply pick them up and safely discard them without getting glitter all over
the drama studio. I also asked the site manger if we could use the hoover after
to hover any of the glitter which didn’t go on the plastic sheets. The drama
studio had good lighting and the background we wanted so filming was simple as
we had set up a tripod which was set up perfect. The only problem we have was
when we were throwing the glitter sometimes our hands got in the shot but
hopefully this problem will be able to be cut out when we are editing.
Once we finished filming we went back to the media room and
uploaded our footage to the computer ready to edit when we come back to school
the following week. Molly is going to America in half term so she has planned
to take a camera with her and film some footage of her in different locations
while lip-syncing which we can hopefully put into our final edit.
Day 18- Thursday 27th
October
Today (half term) I carried on with the digipak editing and
research and started to put my ideas of the image I wanted to create onto the
digipak. I looked at images which we had already taken to see if they could be
put onto the digi-pak and play around with and with the research I had already
done of similar artist for our old and new image I was able to clear ideas of
exactly what I wanted to put on the digipak such as artist as Jess Glynne or
Skream! I also added to the production diary and made some blog post of some
tasks which I hadn’t done or posted yet. I also made my tags were up to date so
I wouldn’t have to go through them at the end of this year to make sure they
are correctly labelled.
Day 19- Tuesday 1st November
To go with our half way evaluation, we watched some
presentations from the classes from last year on what they presented in their
lesson. We are going to be doing the same task therefore we needed to see what
they did well and what they needed to do better. This meant we could plan and
start our presentation to our class. We hope to film a lot of our presentation
to make it interesting. As well as this we looked again at our individual tasks
such as the website, the digi-pak and the production and filming diaries.
Day 20- Wednesday 2nd
November
Today’s lesson we filmed an interview for our presentation,
we set up two tripods to do the camera angle shot reverse shot by placing one facing me and one facing Molly placed
behind our shoulders. I was the interviewer and asked Molly some questions about
the music video and what was coming up in the music video and herself as an
upcoming artist. We added this footage to premiere and created a BBC radio one
style interview. Molly added this video to YouTube and then we both put it onto
our blogs ready for the half way evaluation.
Day 21- Thursday 3rd November
Today’s lesson we took the time on the presentation. I
created a Prezi to show the work we have done on websites, social media and the
interview which we will be showing to the class. Also today, I finished the
digi-pak, Molly added more too all the social media sites which included images
from recent filming and photo-shoots. We also presented our work to the class
and showed everyone our ideas so far for our video, we showed our interview,
social media sites, the digi-pak and the website we have produced and we also
showed a sneak peek video of our work so far which will contribute to our final
piece.
Day 22- Friday 4th November
Today’s lesson was had the half way evaluation lesson. We
filled in forms to our thoughts on the other groups skills about each group
member. We believe that even though we are only a group of two, meaning we have
a bigger workload than the groups of threes and fours, we are slowly getting
there on making our ideas come together to make the music video we want as well
as the image of the artist we want. From our half evaluation we received
feedback from the other groups not only did I get creative inspiration from the
other groups to put into our work I got ideas on how to manage our workload
better. I also took a camera to my finds house to film some little bits, which
we may be able to put into the final edit later on.
Day 23- Saturday 5th November
On Friday, I charged up a camera for tonight, as I knew I
had a party in which I would be able to get some good footage for the music
video, as it is the theme, we, as a group are wanting. At the party there was
coloured lighting which gave a tint on the people, which I was filming, which
made the footage interesting and the image we are going for.
Day 24- Monday 7th November
Today we continued with our individual tasks. Molly edited
the music video on premiere and will continue to do so for the rest of the
week. I added to the digi-pak by editing and tweaking some more photos. In addition, Molly started creating some items
for the store for merchandise such as phone cases, mugs and bags. We both added
our blogs. I have also been looking at different images and colour to add to
the album covers.
Day 25- Tuesday 6th November
We used today’s lesson again to work on our own tasks. Molly
continued with editing the music video ready for the first draft, I created
some T-shirts on vistaprint for the websites store and looked more into text on
the digi-pak.
Day 26 – Day 29- Wednesday 7th November to Friday
11th November
This week again we carried on with our own tasks. Molly
added to the website, which now has a bibliography up and links to these venues
as well as more images on the gallery, which now are updated to the original, and
merchandise personalised and up on the store. There are a range of products,
which are up for sale including mugs, phone cases, bags and lanyards. Molly and
I both edited some more of the video which is coming along nicely and I put
final changes some of the nearer complete pages of the digi-pak. All three
tasks are coming along well and we have all been adding to the social media
sites such as the twitter, Instagram, snap chat and Facebook pages.
Day 30– Day 31- Monday 14th November to Tuesday 15th
November
For the past two days, Molly
finished the bibliography and tour dates, then went on to do the merchandise,
and became up to date with her blog. I did font research and filled out a risk
assessment table; I also worked and uploaded album cover ideas. Today molly is
working on the magazine, while I plan exactly what shots we are filming later
today and finishing the digi-pak.
Day 32- Wednesday 16th
November
We decided that the theme we had
changed to for our music video wasn’t working as it didn’t portray the lyrics
in the song enough. We know we needed to go to a theme which was upbeat and was
all about having fun. We also decided that Molly should not only lip sync but
also be the main character in the narrative and throughout. We also decided to
ensure lots of bright colours and shown throughout the music video to represent
happiness. We came up with clear ideas
of what we wanted to include in the video to represent the small things which
make a seventeen a seventeen-year-old. We decided to do a bucket list of the
things someone would want to do before they turned eighteen. We then made a shooting schedule ready for
next week to ensure the filming is done in time with enough time to edit.
Day 33- Thursday 17th
November
As we decided to change the theme
of our music again we needed to change the digi-pak and the website to ensure
all three pieces have synergy and flow. We decided to key point Molly’s coat which
is yellow to use across all of our branding for our artists and this insures
our artist is eye-catching and recognisable. Our theme colours across all of
our branding is Yellow, black and white which work well together. We wanted to
ensure we appealed to our market audience of teenagers aged 14-16 by ensuring
no sexualised pictures are used and only fun vibrant ones instead are used. I
have taken the feedback from the half way evaluation on the digi-pak of what
everyone liked on my old digi-pak and disliked and transferred that over to the
new digi-pak in which I have started to create to match our new artist image.
Instead of having to do a new photo-shoot I used images from our first
photo-shoot and changed the colour of her top from blue to black to ensure it
matched our theme but as well as save time so I could focus on editing the new
music video. Molly also did this with the website.
Day 34- Sunday 20th
November
Molly didn’t have work today so
took the opportunity to do some filming. She went to London with some of her
friends who helped film for her. She got various shots of the things we had
planned to film to show the representations of what a typical seventeen-year-old
would be doing. This included going winter wonderland, going on fairground rides,
shopping and visiting the Christmas market. The footage which was taken was
high quality and had various shots which was exactly what we wanted and to
portray.
Day 35 – Tuesday 22nd
November
Due to all this footage which was
collected we were able to start editing. We also asked other people to watch
for feedback and adjusting changes. For example, Miss Brookes said at the start
a couple of shots needed to be changed as they are too dark compared to the
rest of the footage which defeats the look of our video which is to be bright
and vibrant. Molly created some more features to the website which includes
some return buttons on the store page. I added some more to the album cover,
this involved adding a print of our artist’s name which is also seen as the
front cover of her photo album in the music video.
Day 36- 38 – Wednesday 23rd
November to Friday 25th November
I was absent for the rest of the
week so Molly had to carry on with filming without me. She decided to film the
sleepover with her friend after school. She also carried on with the editing.
Day 39 – Monday 28th
November
Today molly showed me the filming
she had done and the editing which she done while I was absent. We both agreed
what worked really well and what shots needed re-filming. I then continued to
edited while molly carried on with the website with putting updated pictures
throughout and childhood pictures in the bio page. The digi-pak is also coming
on nicely as the images in which have been chosen have been carefully sorted
through to ensure it wasn’t too much which would make it look unprofessional but
also are original and interesting to look at.
Day 40- Tuesday 29th
November
At the start of the lesson, we got
together as a group and watched the video, we agreed we all really liked the
first draft so far. We then gathered both Miss Field and Miss Brookes and 5
other people from the class including two from another class working in the
room to get some feedback. Getting feedback from the two students who are in
another media class was really useful as it was really good to hear their
comments as they are both really good media students. All the feedback we got
was really helpful as we got specific shot feedback rather than the whole song
which will really help when adding improvements. With this feedback, as we have
planned to film tomorrow to get some of the last major footage needed, we
decided to review what we had so far and plan exactly what we are shooting
tomorrow. This will be Molly and her friends in town trying on lots of
different funky outfits.
In the morning, we filmed Molly
looking through her photo album and finding her bucket list. We then went back
to school and started editing the footage into the edit. All the footage, which
was shoot, was useable and what we wanted. I also got my teachers to go through
my digi-pak with me and tell me what needed changing and improving. Molly also
made further improvements to the website and we both added to our blogs.
Day 43- Day 47- Monday 5th
December to Friday 9th December
These lessons we continued with our
tasks to complete final drafts. We all helped with each task but mainly we bot
focused on the video, I focused on the digi-pak and Molly did the website. We
have also all contributed to taking more photos to edit to add to social media,
the website and the magazine. Also in this time, we have received a lot of
feedback from another, teachers and the class, this has helped us change
certain things on each task and has helped to know what else needs doing. We
will now submit our final tasks after changing final features to make sure we
are happy with them. We have kept our blogs updated including the production
diary and images we have taken through photo bucket.
We have also finished, filmed and
uploaded the storyboard video to YouTube from premiere, which has a voice over
added to it. We have also completed editing the lip sync task, which just needs
uploading to YouTube then our blogs.
This
is the autograph which we chose to use in the end when signing things for fans.
I think this looks really effective and we chose to use stars as part of the
autograph to make it look young and fun. This could also be adapted by using a
yellow colour rather than black.
